Direct-to-Chip Cooling: What Contractors Need to Know
Liquid cooling for AI GPUs is rewriting the playbook for mechanical contractors — here’s what we’ve learned.

AI-accelerated computing is rewriting the rules for data center cooling. GPU clusters running 350-watt TDPs can’t be managed by air alone, and the industry has responded with direct-to-chip liquid cooling — distributing chilled water to rack-level cold plates, directly in contact with the compute hardware. For MEP contractors, this creates a new set of precision installation demands.
The piping tolerances are tighter, the material standards are more demanding, and the opportunity for moisture intrusion requires a different quality culture than traditional mechanical work. Northgrid has been actively deploying direct-to-chip systems since early 2023, and our process piping teams have developed detailed QC protocols for every joint, fitting, and pressure test in the loop.
The bottom line for owners and GCs: direct-to-chip installation is not a standard commodity scope. Vet your mechanical contractor’s experience carefully, ask about their QC program, and confirm they have trained crews and documented procedures for the CDU and distribution manifold systems your design specifies.
